I might be drinking this beer a bit fresh, but you know how it is. The bottle's just sitting there in the fridge, taunting you. "You don't want to drink those old beers, you want something new!" I resisted for a while, but I finally gave in.
Aroma: I get a lot of sweet, dark raisins and candied fruits. It smells sweet, dark and complex. Not much grain or hop smell. There's a background note of earthiness. 10/12
Appearance: A clear, almost penny-like copper color. A bit lighter than I wanted, probably due to the home-made candi sugar. Not perfectly bright, but it's a clean beer. The white head disappears far too quickly. 1/3
Flavor: A sweet start is followed by a bone-dry finish. And the high carbonation makes it seem even drier. Not much of a hop presence, but it must be there. A solid maltiness. All the fruit flavors of the aroma are in the flavor as well. Not getting any solvent or hot flavors, which is good. 15/20
Mouthfeel: Pretty light. Lighter than I wanted. Even if I knock some of the copious carbonation out of this beer, the mouthfeel is still a bit thin. The carbonation gives it a nice fizz and there's a mild alcohol warmth. 3/5
Overall: The beer needs a beefier body. If I didn't know better, I'd think the wort had a couple of pounds of sugar in it. As it is, I think the mash temp might be a degree or two too low. If I make this again, I'll bump that up to 150 or 151. 8/10
Total: 37/50
So a good, solid beer. I'm going to check back in with this one in a couple weeks and see how it's doing. Some lagering time won't do this beer any harm, although it won't fix the problem with the body.
